Why do we celebrate the day before Christmas, in addition to the day itself.  Fr. Rob thinks that it is because so much of what makes Christmas important came before the birth of Christ.  This podcast is a recording of the sermon preached by the Rev. Rob Baldwin on December 24, 2012 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence, Kansas.  You can learn more about Trinity Church at www.trinitylawrence.org or by following us on Facebook.

We are doing four baptisms in Advent this Advent season for a variety of reasons, few of which accord with traditional Episcopal piety.  But what a gift to see our baptismal covenant this Sunday, after the week we had.

The crazy coot of the New Testament is an inevitable part of Advent.  But how do you reconcile wreaths, a stable, and all the other traditional iconography of the season with a vitriolic prophet straight out of the Old Testament?  This podcast is a recording of the sermon preached by the Rev. There is a pervasive anxiety in the Church about the future, an anxiety based in declining membership and cultural relevance.  It is anxiety manifested in magazine articles predicting the demise of the Church as an institution, in themes of conventions like "Walking by Faith," and in the sermon preached at Grace Cathedral the Friday of our Diocesan Convention where the preacher conveyed a question posed to him "Is there a place for me in the Church?"

It is to that question, and the anxiety beneath it, that Fr. Rob conveys a challenging but hopeful response from God.  This podcast is a recording of the sermon preached by the Rev. Rob Baldwin at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence, Kansas on October 21, 2012.

Scott Gunn was right, Jesus' prohibition against divorce tempts us into extremes of universal acceptance and rejection of the dissolution of the marital relationship, but we are called instead into a dialogical examination of individual situations before making a decision.  That having been said, certain things deserve to be said up front and from the pulpit.  This podcast is a recording of the sermon preached by the Rev. In the Gospel of Mark, the disciples rebuke a man casting out demon's in Jesus' name.  Their motivations are suspect, and likely indicative of their own anxieties regarding their personal failures.  There is a lot of anxiety in the Episcopal Church about our own ability to continue to grow as faithful Christians; are we too spending too much time criticizing others for their success?  This podcast is a recording of the sermon preached by the Rev. In the midst of rushing to save a terminally ill child, Jesus pauses to heal a chronic yet not physically seriously ill woman.  Her suffering has a different quality, and Jesus' willingness to spend a moment healing her shows us how we are to treat those whose sickness is largely social, not physical.

Now here's a bonus.  This recording is from the 8:00 AM service, and if you listen there is about a two second pause in the sermon. It's at that moment that a mentally ill homeless man enters the church, illustrating perfectly what the sermon is all about.  This sermon was preached by the Rev.
